USF1 appears to be DOA |
|
|
US F1's team boss Ken Anderson has asked permission for his team to miss the first four races of its debut season this year.
The team responded to rumors it was facing problems by insisting "we are not gone" on Thursday, but Anderson has now told the New York Times that US F1 is in financial trouble.
"We're working with the FIA to clarify how many races we can miss," he told the newspaper.
The entire USF1 experience is more of a sad comedy than an actual bid to
put forth a competitive F1 team. As an American F1 fan, I
resent USF1 for wasting our time. Please put this lame attempt to
sleep once and for all so that we can move on rooting for an actual
team. Here is a recent blog post:
Entries are taken annually. An entry for this year only covers the
2010 season. The details of the new Concorde Agreement will, presumably,
be different from past versions but the CA is always a 3-way document.
It's possible that FOM has a clause whereby a team is deemed to be dead
(from the commercial side) after 3 no-shows. As far as the FIA is
concerned the teams have always signed to appear at every race. If you
recall, in the past failing teams have got round this by turning up but
doing things like intentionally failing to qualify. At present that's
not an option because Qualifying doesn't truly exist now & a team
would have to have a car capable legally (crash-tested &
homologated) to be fit to qualify, anyway. Payments to the teams have
also changed. I think the top 10 teams will now be paid. Historically,
there was a very good reason for not paying the last few entrants. It
stopped the cruise-'n-collect outfits who were less interested in racing
than picking up the proceeds or using F1 fo less savoury purposes ;-) It
meant that only teams serious enough about making the grade race-wise
were paid. In theory, if USF1 were allowed to miss races & ended up
at the bottom of the table, they wouldn't receive money from the TV
rights etc. They would, presumably, still get Bernie's perks & 10
million if they didn't breach any contract rules with him but I don't
think Bernie is dumb enough to sign away money to a team who don't
actually produce a car. It's all supposition, though, because the
details of the CA are kept secret.
One thing is painfully obvious, Bernie did a horrible job making sure
that the new teams could afford to be in F1. Bernie seems anti-American
as he must have known full well that USF1 would be a laughing stock.
This clearly will set Formula 1 in the United States back years.
This may be enough to destroy any chance of F1 in the US market for
decades. |
UPDATE::::::::::FIA MAKES IT OFFICIAL
|
FIA Formula One World Championship
The USF1 Team have indicated that they will not be in a position to
participate in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. Having
considered the various options, the FIA confirms that it is not
possible for a replacement team to be entered for the Championship at
this late stage.
In the coming days the FIA will announce details of a new selection
process to identify candidates to fill any vacancies existing at the
start of the 2011 season.
